چکیده

Is mitochondrial volume maintained during polarized cell growth? How well do cells ensure that they maintain uniform organelle distribution when they undergo polarized cell growth and subsequent division. S. Rafelski from the Marshall laboratory at University of California–San Francisco used three-dimensional, computationalmodeling methods to demonstrate that mitochondrial volume is maintained during yeast budding through a balance of partial mitochondrial inheritance from the mother and further mitochondrial biogenesis in the daughter. These data demonstrate that cells are systematically maintaining their mitochondrial volume.

ER-driven membrane contact sites: Evolutionary conserved machineries for stress response and autophagy regulation?

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), spreading in the whole cell cytoplasm, is a central player in eukaryotic cell homeostasis, from plants to mammals. Beside crucial functions, such as membrane lipids and proteins synthesis and outward transport, the ER is able to connect to virtually every endomembrane compartment by specific tethering molecular machineries, which enables the establishment of membrane...

ATG8 Is Essential Specifically for an Autophagy-Independent Function in Apicoplast Biogenesis in Blood-Stage Malaria Parasites

Plasmodium parasites and related pathogens contain an essential nonphotosynthetic plastid organelle, the apicoplast, derived from secondary endosymbiosis. Intriguingly, a highly conserved eukaryotic protein, autophagy-related protein 8 (ATG8), has an autophagy-independent function in the apicoplast. Little is known about the novel apicoplast function of ATG8 and its importance in blood-stage Pl...

Autophagy Mechanisms for Brain Recovery. Keep It Clean, Keep It Alive

Most neurological pathologies that afflict humans are associated with the abnormal accumulation and aggregation of specific proteins into the cytoplasm and with mitochondrial dysfunction. Neuronal health is sustained by the fine regulation of protein synthesis and organelle biogenesis and their degradation to ensure efficient turnover. Autophagy is a powerful process for removing such proteins ...

Autophagy-Related Protein ATG18 Regulates Apicoplast Biogenesis in Apicomplexan Parasites

Mechanisms by which 3'-phosphorylated phosphoinositides (3'-PIPs) regulate the development of apicomplexan parasites Plasmodium falciparum and Toxoplasma gondii are poorly understood. The catabolic process of autophagy, which is dependent on autophagy-related proteins (ATGs), is one of the major targets of 3'-PIPs in yeast and mammals. In the present study, we identified autophagy-related prote...

Dual roles of an Arabidopsis ESCRT component FREE1 in regulating vacuolar protein transport and autophagic degradation.

Protein turnover can be achieved via the lysosome/vacuole and the autophagic degradation pathways. Evidence has accumulated revealing that efficient autophagic degradation requires functional endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) machinery. However, the interplay between the ESCRT machinery and the autophagy regulator remains unclear. Here, we show that FYVE domain protein re...
